VAUGHAN, August 18, 2016 – Today, the first steel supports for a 9.1-metre high and 50-metre long canopy were delivered to support the roof of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre [VMC] – Spadina Subway Station. The station is located along Highway 7, west of Jane Street at Millway Avenue, in the City of Vaughan and is part of the York Viva Bus Rapid Transit [vivaNext] rapidways in York Region.
As a key location in the Region’s Centres and Corridors plan, the VMC area is where 11,000 businesses and 330,000 residents will benefit from transit improvements. York University is just seven minutes away by subway with over 50,000 students and young professionals requiring access to fast, convenient and integrated services. This station is central to connecting Vaughan’s downtown to the GTA, allowing more than 5.5 million more people to work, seek entertainment and pursue education in York Region.
The modern, arched canopy covers the entire rapidway station, which includes an elevator and stairs down to the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, with an underground path to the YRT bus terminal. This station also has longer and wider platforms to accommodate the number of people that will be using the facilities daily.
“In Vaughan, we’re building a vivastation that will connect people to more travel options,” said Steven Del Duca, Ontario Minister of Transportation. “Once operational, this station will move us one step closer to a connected transit network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.”
“This new station is another example of York Region’s commitment to building a modern, efficient and affordable transit system for the benefit of all our residents, and residents across the GTA,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Transportation is the number one issue for individuals, families and businesses, so York Region is making significant investments to manage congestion and reduce travel times, while protecting our environment.”
“This station is an example of how transit service integration across municipal boundaries can support improved mobility in the region,” said Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. “We’re working with municipalities like York Region to move forward on transforming communities across the GTHA.”
The York Viva bus rapid transit project represents a $1.4 billion [2009$] transit investment from the Government of Ontario, and is part of Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan, a 25-year plan for an integrated and sustainable transit and transportation system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area [GTHA]. The project is being funded by Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario. Visit metrolinx.com more information.
