MARKHAM, May 17, 2016 – York Region Rapid Transit Corporation (YRRTC) has been recognized for communications excellence by the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). During CUTA’s annual meeting in Halifax, YRRTC won the National Corporate Leadership Award for its business support communications campaign during the construction of Viva dedicated bus rapid transit lanes along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

CUTA’s National Corporate Leadership Award, in the category of communications, recognizes exceptional development and implementation of marketing and communications initiatives for both external and internal audiences.

Rapidway construction underway along Davis Drive in the Town of Newmarket created a need for recognizing and supporting businesses as a valuable part of the future of Davis Drive. YRRTC’s business support communications encouraged residents to shop and dine on Davis Drive, and built awareness that businesses are open and accessible during construction.

“We are proud of this latest accomplishment by the team planning, designing and building our modern Viva Rapid Transit system throughout York Region,” said York Region Chairman and CEO, Wayne Emmerson. “Anytime you build a system as large and complex as Viva, our residents and businesses are inconvenienced for a considerable amount of time. But keeping them properly informed is critical to ensuring our businesses can continue to grow and succeed.”

“This award is a shining example of how to work together with a community during a time of significant change,” said Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. “With the work we’re doing across the entire Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, we recognize how important it is for businesses to be supported by their local community during construction, so that the entire area continues to thrive.”

The York Viva bus rapid transit project represents a $1.4 billion (2009$) transit investment from the Government of Ontario, and is part of Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan, a 25-year plan for an integrated and sustainable transit and transportation system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The project is being funded by Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario. Visit www.metrolinx.com for more information.
