NEWMARKET, October 18, 2013– As part of the York Viva Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on Davis Drive in the Town of Newmarket, Parkside Drive has been re-aligned to line up with Longford Drive as a full four-way intersection. The re-alignment eliminated one set of traffic lights and improves overall traffic flow in the area.

This is just one of many achievements reached this summer on the vivaNext rapidway project. Nearly all retaining walls have been constructed, the eastern creek culvert has been replaced and extended and the majority of hydro poles have been relocated. Road widening and base-layer paving has started, while reconstruction of KeithBridge and the extension of the western creek bridge on the north side continue.

The Davis Drive rapidway in Newmarket will extend 2.6 kilometres from Yonge Street to Roxborough Road, with the viva rapid transit service continuing in the curb lane eastbound to Highway 404. The project features six new rapid transit stations and attractive streetscape features, such as wider sidewalks, landscaping and heritage elements in the design of the new KeithBridge. As Newmarket continues to grow, the Davis Drive rapidway will help create new destinations to live, work, shop and play.

The York Viva Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project represents a $1.4 billion provincial transit commitment made in the spring of 2009, and is an example of The Big Move in action – Metrolinx’s 25-year plan to implement a common vision for transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The project is being implemented by Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario. For more information about The Big Move, visit bigmove.ca
