VAUGHAN – A new information centre has opened to the community in the City of Vaughan, to be shared by the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) project, and the York Viva Bus Rapid Transit – Highway 7 West rapidway project.
The new office is a place for the community to make enquiries, see project maps, provide feedback and obtain project brochures. Located at 7800 Jane Street on the northwest corner of Highway 7, the office is near the future subway station, rapidway station and bus terminal.
The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre development area will be busy over the next few years with the two transit construction projects occurring at the same time. Each project is being funded and built separately, but together will form an important hub for public transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
The TYSSE project is an 8.6-kilometre extension of the TTC’s Yonge-University-Spadina subway line from its present terminus at Downsview Station to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre at Highway 7, including six new stations. The expansion of the subway will bring the line into York Region, the fastest-growing region in the GTA over the past 10 years. The TYSSE project will form a key piece of TTC’s transit infrastructure and is targeted for completion in fall of 2016.
The York Viva rapidway to be built along Highway 7 extends 3.5 kilometres from Interchange Way/Edgeley Boulevard to just east of Keele Street at Bowes Road, and will include three new vivastations. Construction will begin this year, and is scheduled to be complete in fall of 2016 to coincide with TYSSE project timelines.
The Government of Canada is contributing up to $697 million through the Building Canada Fund for the subway extension. The Province has provided $870 million through the Move Ontario Trust to support the TYSSE project. The City of Toronto is contributing $526 million to the TYSSE project, and The Regional Municipality of York is contributing $352 million.
The York Viva Bus Rapid Transit projects represent $1.4 billion in provincial transit investment, and are an example of The Big Move in action – Metrolinx’s bold 25-year plan to implement a common vision for transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The Big Move is in progress with over $16 billion in projects currently under construction all across the GTHA. The Big Move’s ‘Next Wave’ projects will continue Metrolinx’s transformation of the region’s transportation system by expanding the regional transit network as well as providing resources for local transit, roads, active transportation and more.
