Environmental Project Review completed for Yonge subway extension into York Region
NEWMARKET — The Regional Municipality of York, in partnership with the York Region Rapid Transit Corporation, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), have completed an Environmental Project Review of the Yonge subway extension from Finch Station in the City of Toronto to Richmond Hill Centre in the Town of Richmond Hill.

This is the first project in Ontario assessed under the new streamlined Transit Project Assessment Process.
“Moving this project forward through the streamlined process puts the Yonge subway extension in a strong position for funding and closer to project construction,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “There is a great deal of public support for this project in York Region and we recognize the tremendous role the subway would play in curbing gridlock and shaping future development.”
The proposed project would extend the Yonge subway 6.8 kilometres from Finch Station to Richmond Hill, would add six new subway stations, a commuter parking lot with passenger drop-off and pick-up facilities and two new terminals at Steeles Avenue and Richmond Hill Centre, located just north of Highway 7. Over the past several months, numerous public information meetings and workshops have been held to provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on conceptual designs and the functional planning study.
In November 2008, Metrolinx identified the Yonge subway extension among its list of priority projects to be completed within the next 15 years.
The Yonge subway extension is part of vivaNext, the plan to deliver the next generation of rapid transit in York Region and to connect surrounding growing communities. The vivaNext plan includes the extension of the Spadina subway north from Downsview Station in the City of Toronto to the City of Vaughan Corporate Centre and the construction of bus-only rapidways for Viva vehicles along major roads throughout York Region.
The public has until March 4, 2009 to review the Yonge subway Environmental Project Review and provide any comments or concerns. The document can be reviewed online at: www.vivayork.ca
