tomorrow >> new traffic signal activation on Highway 7 West at Nova Star Drive
Tomorrow morning, crews will be activating new traffic signals at the intersection of Highway 7 West and Nova Star Drive. In
addition, traffic will shift to allow for rapidway construction in the centre lanes. Please see below for further details.
what you need to know:
work dates*: Thursday, January 10
work hours*: 5:00am – 11:00am
- To prepare for the traffic shift and new signal activations, starting tonight crews will be
painting new traffic lines on Highway 7 just east and west of Nova Star.
- Lanes will be reduced overnight to one lane in each direction.
- Once the line painting is complete, a traffic shift creating a centre median area will be in
place just east and west of the intersection to accommodate rapidway construction.
- During this new activation, the old traffic lights will be out of service intermittently, in
all directions. Expect to see the lights out or flashing.
- Once activated, crews will return at a later date to remove the old signal poles and
equipment.
- As crews make their way around the intersection, this work will require short-term lane
closures around each work area.
- Paid duty police officers will be onsite for the duration of the work to control traffic.
- This traffic shift will be permanent as crews begin constructing the rapidway in the centre of
the roadway.
- Visit our vivaNext YouTube channel and watch
the "Rapidway Left Turns" video to see how traffic on Highway 7 West will move in the final configuration.
- This traffic shift will result in permanent changes to how pedestrians and motorists will use
the intersection.
new for motorists:
- The Highway 7 and Nova Star intersection will now have a dedicated left-turn traffic signal.
- Drivers can only turn left when the left-turn arrow is illuminated, and left-turns are not
permitted when through traffic proceeds.
- To access mid-block entrances on opposite sides of the road, drivers can make a U-turn at the
intersection.
new for pedestrians:
- Since intersections are wider with more lanes and new signals, pedestrians may need to cross
Highway 7 in two stages.
- There will be a pedestrian waiting area in the middle of the crosswalk where pedestrians can
stop, push the "walk" button, and wait for the next walk signal to safely cross the second half of the street.
- A countdown signal will indicate how many seconds pedestrians have left to safely cross the
street.
general impacts:
- Sidewalks and bus stops will remain open wherever possible. If a sidewalk or bus stop is
temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk or bus stop.
- Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed
through construction zones.
*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other
variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible. Check twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
