The vivaNext bus rapidway project on Highway 7 West is making excellent progress! Starting Thursday night, to accommodate excavation for the future Ansley Grove Road vivastation, there will be overnight paving, line painting and a traffic shift on Hwy 7 West between just west of Ansley Grove Rd/Whitmore to Nova Star Drive. This work will also include activation of new traffic signals at this intersection. Please see below for details.
traffic shift on Highway 7 at Ansley Grove/Whitmore:
work dates*: Thursday, May 10 to Friday, May 11
work hours*: 7pm—6am [overnight]
- To prepare for the traffic shift, crews will be paving and then painting new traffic lines on Highway 7 both east and west of the Ansley Grove/Whitmore intersection.
- Lanes will be reduced overnight to one lane in each direction. Motorists and transit riders may experience traffic delays in these areas due to lane reductions.
- Once the line painting is complete, a traffic shift creating a centre median area will be in place from just west of Ansley Grove/Whitmore to west of Nova Star Rd to accommodate upcoming excavation work for the future vivastation platform.
- Two lanes of traffic in each direction will reopen Friday morning with traffic shifted to the north and south sides of the road.
- This traffic shift will be permanent as crews begin constructing the vivastation and rapidway in the centre of the roadway.
signal activation at Highway 7 and Ansley Grove/Whitmore:
work dates*: Friday, May 11
work hours*: 3am—4am [overnight]
- Crews will be shifting the signal heads and new traffic signals will be activated at the intersection.
- Traffic lights may be out of service in all directions. Expect to see the lights out or flashing.
- Paid duty police officers will be onsite for the duration of the work to control traffic.
permanent changes to pedestrian and motorist movement:
This traffic shift will result in permanent changes to how pedestrians and motorists will use the intersection.
- The Highway 7 & Ansley Grove/Whitmore intersection will now have a dedicated left-turn traffic signal.
- Drivers can only turn left when the left-turn arrow is illuminated, and left turns are not permitted when through traffic proceeds.
- To access mid-block entrances on opposite sides of the road, drivers can make a U-turn at the intersection.
- Dedicated right-turn lanes will now become a right and through lane. There will no longer be a dedicated lane for right-turns.
- Since intersections are wider with new signals, pedestrians may need to cross Highway 7 in two stages.
- A countdown signal will indicate how many seconds pedestrians have left to safely cross the street.
- Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
- Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
- Cross at the designated crosswalk. It can be tempting to cross in the middle of the road, but this can be very dangerous. Instead, cross at a designated crosswalk. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.
We understand that overnight work is disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible. While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable. Read more about how we balance the needs of the corridor in working day and night.
crews dedicated to minimize disruption where possible:
- Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper.
- Aim headlights away from buildings and homes.
- Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates.
- Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings.
- Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well.
