Even before it became a region in 1971, York Region has been an important part of Canada for more than 150 years. Key fur trade routes travel through the region, and Newmarket hosted the first speech to spark the 1837-1838 rebellions [leading to the British North America Act and the creation of Canada]. In more recent years, we’ve become one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada and headquarters for many international businesses.
There are so many ways to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial and YRT/Viva can get you there. To help you plan your celebration, here are a few of the biggest Canada-150 events in York Region:
- The City of Vaughan is well-known for its super-fun Canada Day event, and this year the festivities are at the Boyd Conservation Area. Come say hello at the vivaNext booth! This family-friendly event runs from noon to 10 pm with live musical performances and a midway.
- In Markham, celebrate at Milne Dam Conservation Park, with an official flag raising, live entertainment, lots of family-friendly activities, and amazing fireworks in the evening.
- Newmarket’s celebrations will include its traditional pancake breakfast along with vendors, rides, and live entertainment at the Riverwalk Commons, and in the evening, fireworks at George Richardson Park.
- Canada Day in Richmond Hill at the Richmond Green Park will be a blast, featuring a marketplace, the SuperDogs, air-brush tattoos, and of course hockey [with mini sticks].
