And the new name is…

The City of Vaughan’s downtown core will undergo a transformation over the next several years. Encompassing 125-acres, development plans include office and residential towers, shopping and entertainment complexes, plenty of green spaces and pedestrian walkways, and, of course, vivaNext rapid transit connections.

In recognition of all the exciting changes to come, Vaughan City Council determined that a change of name – from Vaughan Corporate Centre – was in order to better reflect the true vision and future of this key hub.

This summer, the City held a contest where people were encouraged to submit their suggestions. Almost 1,600 entries were received, including Central Vaughan, Vaughan Gateway, Vaughan Mosaic Centre and Vaughan Nexus.

In the end, Vaughan Metropolitan Centre was chosen as the winning entry by the City subcommittee that reviewed all the submissions, which consisted of business stakeholders and citizens.

“People wanted something that’s easy enough to remember and still reflected what we want to see from the downtown,” said Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco, who chaired the City subcommittee.

The sun may be in short supply this summer but the sunny smile of our Grand Prize winner, Larisa Roiberg, sure made up for it. The Friday before last, a beaming Larisa stopped by our vivaNext office to pick up her new iPod touch® after her name was randomly selected from all eligible entrants in our Next Best Thing To Summer Contest.

So how did her winning streak begin?

Larisa says she learned about our contest when she stopped by one of our booths at the mall to learn more about vivaNext projects. While there, the vivaNext team told her how much fun it was to complete our interactive story, so she decided to go online and give it a try when she got home. And wow, is she glad she did.

During the four weeks that our contest ran, about a thousand people submitted entries that showed us what their picture perfect summer looks like. Perhaps you were one of them, and maybe you were even one of the daily prize winners?

If not, don’t worry because you’ll soon have plenty of other chances to win during our upcoming fall and winter contests. The prizes will be just as exciting so be sure to watch for news about them here, on Twitter and at vivaNext.com.

Big step toward starting construction on the Spadina subway extension

Lovat, an Ontario-based company that makes tunnel boring equipment, has been awarded a $58-million contract to build four machines that will be used in the construction of the Spadina subway extension.

The announcement was made last Friday, August 7, at the Lovat plant by Ontario Transportation Minister Jim Bradley, joined by MP Bob Dechert, York Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch, TTC Chair Adam Giambrone and Lovat President Dick Cooper. Not only does this mean the creation of some 200 jobs in the GTA and a boost to the economy, it signals continued progress on the project as it’s scheduled to open in 2015.

Prior to the announcement, I had the pleasure of joining the group for a bit of a tour of Lovat. We met at one end of their Mississauga plant and walked through to the other end while learning about what’s involved in making tunnel boring equipment. Cameras and reporters were waiting at the end of the tour to hear each dignitary deliver a short speech about the announcement.

It was awe-inspiring to watch the dignitaries being interviewed in front of a massive tunnel boring machine. They’re HUGE. Just take a look at the picture below to see how big they are compared to the people near them.

Lovat has built similar and even larger machines for projects all around the world, from Algeria to Venezuela. “We are pleased to be a part of this significant mass-transit project, as it not only generates jobs and strengthens infrastructure locally, but also highlights Canada’s technological capabilities on a global scale,” said Cooper.

The first two machines are expected to be delivered in the fall of 2010, with tunnel boring to begin shortly after.

Celebrate Canada’s birthday with vivaNext!

On July 1, vivaNext teams will be out in the community at two different locations taking part in Canada Day celebrations and talking to local residents about our projects.

One of our teams will be at Fairy Lake in Newmarket for the Kanata Day festivities, where you can start the day with a pancake breakfast until noon for just $3 a serving. There will also be all sorts of other fun activities for the entire family to enjoy including inflatable bouncers, a bike competition, a baseball tournament, and live entertainment including our very own vivaNext mime. Then to top it all off, there will be the annual fireworks display presented by the Town of Newmarket.

Our second vivaNext team will be celebrating the day at the Canada Day Home Show in Richmond Hill. If you decide to spend the day there, be sure to drop by our booth to learn more about vivaNext. The Show’s taking place at the Sports Complex at 1300 Elgin Mills Road East from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At vivaNext, we can’t think of a better way to spend Canada Day than with all of the great people who reside in York Region. We look forward to seeing you!

Join us for the Davis Drive rapidway public meeting

Ever wonder how vivaNext will transform our community? We will be holding a public meeting this evening to discuss the Davis Drive rapidway project.

With the adoption of the new vision for Newmarket combined with the future opening of the regional cancer centre and current conditions along Davis Drive, it is one of the first rapidways to get under construction this fall.

Join us tonight to see a futuristic time-lapse video that depicts the evolution over the next few years. Speakers will present information on how the rapidways will put the rapid into rapid transit including preliminary phasing for construction and Newmarket’s vision for the future. More construction information will be available in the fall closer to the time when it will begin.

This evening’s meeting will be an excellent opportunity to not only see these plans, but to have your say in person.

Whether you are a resident, business owner or just curious about what rapidways will bring to the Region, please come to the public meeting.

Light rail transit coming soon to York Region

Imagine a light rail line that could take you from Danforth all the way up the Don Mills/Leslie corridor into Richmond Hill. That was one of the transit projects identified by Metrolinx near the end of last year as part of the master plan for transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

The light rail line study is now underway and we want your input. We are having a public meeting on Wednesday, June 10, where we will present our plan for the York Region portion of the line that will run on Leslie from Steeles to Highway 7.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) are currently undertaking a preliminary planning study to identify an LRT route in this corridor from Danforth to Steeles. Although we are conducting different studies, we are working with staff at the City of Toronto and TTC on the light rail line.

Similar to our vivaNext rapidways, the LRT vehicles will operate in their own right-of-ways – enabling them to safely speed past congested traffic, no matter what time of day.

Like all of our projects, we want to ensure that anyone with an interest in the study has the opportunity to get involved and have their voice heard.

York Region residents cite congestion as reason to improve transit

Traffic congestion

We all know that traffic congestion is getting worse. The major arteries, including Yonge St., Davis Dr. and Highway 7, are packed during peak hours of the day and congestion is only expected to get worse. That is a key reason why York Region is taking steps to improve rapid transit and build livable cities.

We wanted to know what you had to say about congestion, so we recently conducted a survey.* When asking York Region residents how they rate traffic congestion on a 10-point scale, over 75% of them said it was between a six and a 10, where 10 was high traffic congestion. In fact, four times more people rate traffic congestion as “high” than rate it as “low”. And almost 25% of the people surveyed rated congestion as an eight on the scale.

When asked about solutions, the largest percentage of respondents said that more and better rapid transit was the answer. People also cited bicycle lanes and more roads as other solutions.

It sounds like we are on the right track to providing those who work and/or live in York Region the solutions they need to avoid congestion.

Yonge subway extension closer to reality

We did it. Thanks to your help throughout our extensive public consultation process, we received approval from the Ministry of the Environment for the Yonge subway extension.

This is fantastic news because the extension up Yonge Street will create the backbone for a seamless transit network that will get you to the places you need to go faster and with fewer connections.

The approval from the Ministry means that the project is in a strong position to receive funding and soon after that happens, shovels can hit the ground. The plans are calling for a 6.8 km extension that will include six new stations and finish at the Langstaff/Richmond Hill Centre at Highway 7.

To put together the report, we engaged the public in many ways, including town hall meetings that hundreds of people attended and gave excellent feedback. It was that feedback that allowed us to address many community concerns and in the end, form a solid report.

Our project was the first one to undergo the new six-month process set up by the Ontario government so construction on transit projects could start as soon as possible.

We feel fortunate to have the first project approved under the new streamlined process and we’re excited because this is another step toward making commuting easier for anyone living or travelling in York Region.

Once funding is secured, we will continue to work with you regarding the design details, especially the bridge crossing and parking lot.

Soon this picture will be a reality. It’s time to start imagining a subway with the word “Richmond Hill” on it.

New online stop

I recently created this blog to serve as an informal way to give you a behind-the-scenes look and engage in the online conversation about vivaNext.

But you may not know that we also just launched a new website that is super sleek and easier to navigate.

I’m extremely proud of our former website, in fact it even won a Webby award, the leading international award honouring excellence on the Internet. But times change and technology evolves allowing us to share so much more information with you on our new website in a more creative way.

It’ll include the latest information on subway and rapidway progress, a section on how to get involved and details on who to contact with questions.

One of the coolest features is what we are calling a peak behind the construction wall. Here you can see what tunnel boring and station building looks like. We’ll also showcase our videos including time-lapse animation that will show you what the rapidways will look like and how they’ll fit into your community.

And of course, just like the previous website, there will be a game because we are always looking for ways to have fun.
