crosswalk street printing on Yonge Street in Newmarket

June 12, 2020

Starting Monday, crosswalk street printing will be conducted at each intersection along Yonge Street from Savage Road/Sawmill Valley Drive, to just south of Davis Drive. Crosswalk street printing refers to road markings that clearly show where pedestrians are to cross the street at signalized intersections. The stamping gives the impression of a cobblestone path on the road. Please see below for further details.

work dates*: Monday, June 15, for approximately eight weeks
work hours*: 7am-7pm

what you need to know:

  • Crews will be installing crosswalk street printing, one intersection at a time throughout the corridor. Each intersection will take approximately one week to complete.
  • There will be southbound and northbound lane closures on Yonge, and eastbound or westbound lane closures on the side streets, as crews work around the intersection.
  • At times, left-turn movements from Yonge to side streets will be restricted.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be onsite to help direct traffic, as required.
  • While crews are working within in the crosswalk, it will be closed. Directional signage will guide pedestrians the nearest open crosswalk.
  • If a bus stop or sidewalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be dust and construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through work zones.

safety border

for your safety:

Be alert.

  • Because construction equipment is moved around as work progresses, it's especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to their surroundings. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures or shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

Be safe.

  • Do not walk into construction zones, remove signs or barricades. They're put in place for everyone's safety. Even when no workers are present, it's a hazardous area. Cross at designated crosswalks and follow posted signs. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.

Slow down.

  • Reaction time may decrease when lanes are narrowed. To protect construction workers, pedestrians and yourself, it's crucial to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

Safety is a shared responsibility.

  • Do not ignore safety warnings or put others at risk by moving pylons, signage or caution tape. Let's make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We will provide advance notice when possible. Watch twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
