upcoming work along Yonge Street in Newmarket

You've probably seen some crews working along Yonge Street in Newmarket on the vivaNext rapidway recently. As a provincial transit infrastructure project, our rapidway projects are deemed essential workplaces.

In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the Province's safety guidelines for construction sites, the contractor has implemented numerous measures to ensure the health and safety of all workers. We will also continue to be responsive to the direction of the Province of Ontario, York Region and Public Health Officials during this fluid situation.

Over the next several months, finishing works such as tree planting and bike box painting will be taking place along Yonge from Savage Road/Sawmill Valley Drive to Davis Drive. You'll also see deficiency and warranty work to ensure the end product meets the requirements we set out to build. Please see below for further details.

Map of construction work areas

work dates*: Wednesday May 13, for approximately four months
work hours*: 7am-7pm

what you need to know:

  • Crews will be completing finishing works along the corridor such as planting trees, shrubs and perennials, bike lane and bike box painting, and permanent pavement markings, including crosswalk street printing.
  • Crews will also be completing deficiency and warranty work, such as sidewalk, road and station platform repairs, and anti-graffiti application.
  • To accommodate these work activities, there will be temporary lane closures on Yonge around the work areas, and at times, Yonge will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • At times, bike lanes will be temporarily closed to complete tree and shrub plantings and bike lane and bike box painting.
  • Viva will continue to drop-off/pick-up at all regular stops. Please board at the vivastations as normal.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks and YRT bus stops will remain open. If a bus stop or sidewalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be dust and some construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

safety border

for your safety:

Be alert.

  • Because construction equipment is moved around as work progresses, it's especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to their surroundings. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures or shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

Be safe.

  • Do not walk into construction zones, remove signs or barricades. They're put in place for everyone's safety. Even when no workers are present, it's a hazardous area. Cross at designated crosswalks and follow posted signs. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.

Slow down.

  • Reaction time may decrease when lanes are narrowed. To protect construction workers, pedestrians and yourself, it's crucial to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

Safety is a shared responsibility.

  • Do not ignore safety warnings or put others at risk by moving pylons, signage or caution tape. Let's make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We will provide advance notice when possible. Watch twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
