project milestone >> multi-use path segment opens, traffic signal activations and paving update

October 16, 2019

This Thursday and Friday, crews will be activating the new, permanent traffic signals on Highway 7 West at seven intersections: Colossus Drive, Weston Road, Famous Avenue, Commerce Street, Pine Valley Drive, Helen Street/Wigwoss Drive and Bruce Street. Following the signal activation at Colossus, a segment of the newly constructed multi-use path [MUP] will temporarily open to pedestrians and cyclists in the middle of Highway 7 between Applewood Crescent and Colossus. Additionally, the Helen/Wigwoss and Bruce intersections will be paved during the day this Friday. Please see below for further details.

permanent traffic signal activations:

work dates*: Thursday, October 17 to Friday, October 18
work hours*: 8am–5pm, two to three hours per activation

  • On Thursday, crews will be activating new permanent traffic signals on Highway 7 beginning with the intersection of Colossus, then Weston, followed by Famous, and finally Commerce.
  • On Friday, crews will be activating new permanent traffic signals on Highway 7 beginning with the intersection of Pine Valley, then Helen/Wigwoss, and finally Bruce.
  • Activations take approximately two to three hours per intersection.
  • During these activations, the old traffic lights will be out of service intermittently, in all directions. Expect to see the lights out or flashing.
  • As crews make their way around each intersection, this work will require short-term lane closures.
  • Paid duty police officers will be onsite for the duration of the work to control traffic.
  • Sidewalks will remain open wherever possible. If a sidewalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated or closed. Where bus stops are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop. Provisions will be made for safe boarding and off-boarding at roadside.

work dates*: Thursday, October 17
work hours*: approximately noon

  • As part of the vivaNext project, the Highway 7 West bridge over Highway 400 was expanded in order to accommodate the rapidway lanes, as well as cyclist and pedestrian travel.
  • Following the signal activation at Colossus, the first segment of the newly constructed MUP on the Highway 7 West bridge, between Applewood Crescent/northbound Highway 400 exit ramp to Colossus Drive/southbound Highway 400 exit ramp, will temporarily open to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The MUP is in the centre of Highway 7, situated between the future rapidway lanes and separated by a concrete barrier wall and is wide enough for two-way travel. Pedestrians and cyclists will now cross in the middle of the intersection at Colossus and Applewood.
  • This segment will still require paving and pavement markings which will be completed in the coming weeks.
  • The next segment of MUP on Highway 7, between Colossus/southbound Highway 400 exit ramp to Famous Avenue, will open in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more information!

intersection paving:

work dates*: Friday, October 18
work hours*: 7am–7pm

  • This Friday, the Highway 7 and Helen/Wigwoss, and then Highway 7 and Bruce intersections will be paved with red asphalt.
  • For intersection paving operations, crews will begin by paving the north half of the intersection, followed by the south half.
  • To accommodate this work, there will be traffic shifts and lane closures with no left turns permitted for westbound or eastbound traffic, and right turns only for northbound and southbound traffic while crews are in the intersection.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be onsite to help direct traffic, as needed.
  • Detour signs to indicate alternate routes for motorists will be posted where needed.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks and bus stops will remain open. If a bus stop or sidewalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible. Check twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
